Most of us are stuck somewhere: between two people, two positions, two versions of ourselves, with no way out that does not mean one side losing. The Gift of the Third Position is about the way through. Drawing on Gurdjieff's Law of Three, the old idea that every real change needs a third force beyond the two that are opposed, Tim Stonehocker follows the pattern from the inside of a single mind to a marriage, a company, and a divided country.
The book is written as forty short meditations, one a night for forty days, each one logical but understated, meant to be read slowly and carried into the next morning. It comes out of nineteen years building a technology company and a longer apprenticeship in the Enneagram, Integral theory, and the Christian mystics, and it is for the reader who suspects that the gridlock they are living in is not the last word.
Tim Stonehocker spent nineteen years at SoundHound AI, fifteen of them as chief technology officer, after studying computer science and music technology at Stanford and an early stint at Amazon. Alongside the engineering career he has kept up a long study of the Enneagram, Integral theory, and the Christian mystical tradition. This is his first book.
