Out Walking is a collection of essays that, in Sebastian Matthews's own phrase, loosely cohere: a man in his fifties walking back through his life, in reverse. Recovery after a highway collision. Fatherhood. A father's garden, and the father, the poet William Matthews, who died too soon. Summers, friendships, jazz, the road.
Matthews writes with restraint, trusting the reader to feel what he declines to explain, and the pieces gather into something larger than a memoir without ever asking to be read as one.
Sebastian Matthews is the author of books of memoir and poetry published by W. W. Norton and Red Hen Press. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, where he teaches writing and leads personal-narrative retreats.
About the lane: A Passages book chooses the stretch of a life that means something and renders it in scenes the writer can stand behind.
