For sixteen years, Michelle Hecker Davis has sat across the table from children, teens and adults who came to her Chattanooga center struggling to read, to focus, to remember, to keep up. Upgraded Brain tells their stories: a child with dyslexia, a company president, an eighty-five-year-old after a stroke, and others, each of them someone she trained herself, and what she watched change when they did the work.
It is also her own story, from a corporate accounting career she left in tears to the work she calls her dream job, and an argument for why this matters now. Every year we hand more of our thinking to technology, and as she puts it, there is a cost to that convenience.
Upgraded Brain is not a program pitch. Michelle is clear about her lane: she is a cognitive specialist, not a neuroscientist or a psychologist, and the book is a witness to what she has seen, with the research that helps explain it. For parents, educators and adults who suspect their brain can do more than it is being asked to, it is an invitation to keep building it.
“In a world with the ever-growing and ever-changing built-in assistance with technology, where we upgrade everything, these are the stories of upgraded brains.”
